Servicing by engine type

Petrol S-Class maintenance (incl. AMG and EQ Boost variants)

Petrol Mercedes-Benz S-Class models range from conventional multi-cylinder engines to performance AMG versions and later EQ Boost-equipped variants, so service requirements can differ substantially between generations. As well as regular engine oil and filter changes, keep an eye on ignition system condition (spark plugs and coils) and any signs of intake or vacuum leaks, as these can affect refinement and fuel economy. Later petrol models with EQ Boost and 48V systems add extra electrical components, so it’s worth checking the condition of the auxiliary battery and ensuring charging performance remains stable. Select your exact engine to confirm the correct service intervals and any additional checks specific to high-output AMG applications.

Diesel S-Class maintenance (CDI/BlueTEC and later diesels)

Diesel S-Class models include CDI and BlueTEC-era engines as well as later units, and their service needs can be influenced by emissions equipment and driving pattern. In addition to routine oil and filter servicing, pay close attention to air filtration and fuel filtration, especially if the car does a lot of short trips or sits unused for periods. Diesel emissions hardware can be sensitive to operating conditions, so monitoring for warning lights and addressing running issues early can prevent secondary faults. Because there are many diesel variants across the 1999 to 2025 spread, check the selected generation and engine for the exact maintenance plan and any additional diesel-specific operations.

Hybrid and electrified S-Class maintenance (Electricity and 48V MHEV)

Electrified S-Class variants can include full hybrid arrangements (petrol or diesel paired with an electric system) as well as 48V mild-hybrid (MHEV) setups on later cars, so the service checklist may extend beyond a traditional engine-only schedule. Alongside standard engine servicing, it’s important to keep cooling and electrical systems in good order and to take warning messages seriously, as small issues can have wider effects on drivability. 48V systems can introduce additional components such as belt-driven starter-generators and higher-voltage batteries, which makes correct inspection procedures and correct parts selection more critical. Use the engine selector to confirm what applies to your S-Class, as hybrid and MHEV configurations can differ markedly by year and model.

LPG (dual-fuel) S-Class maintenance

Some Mercedes-Benz S-Class models are listed with LPG alongside petrol, and dual-fuel setups can change the maintenance focus compared with petrol-only vehicles. Along with the normal engine service items, you’ll typically want to pay closer attention to ignition condition and smooth running, as LPG operation can be less tolerant of weak spark components. It’s also wise to check for any drivability changes when switching between fuels and address them promptly to avoid knock-on issues. Because LPG implementations vary, confirm the exact requirements for your selected S-Class generation and engine before booking work.

Common service operations for Mercedes-Benz

The operations shown below reflect common service items for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, but the exact list and cadence varies by model year range, engine and fuel type. Confirm the schedule against the generation and engine you’ve selected before planning parts and labour.

Mercedes-Benz electronic diagnostics

If your Mercedes-Benz S-Class shows a warning light or develops a fault between services, an OBD scan is a good first step before replacing parts. Our Mercedes-Benz S-Class OBD fault codes guide helps you understand common code families (powertrain, chassis, body and network) and what they can point to. Use codes alongside symptoms, live data and basic checks such as battery voltage and fluid levels to narrow down the cause. Clear codes only after repairs and a proper re-test.
