Servicing by engine type

Diesel ML maintenance (CDI and BlueTEC)

Mercedes-Benz ML diesel servicing commonly centres on correct oil specification and filter changes, with many variants using CDI/BlueTEC engines such as the 642, 651, 629, 628 and 612 families. Oil change intervals can vary widely across model years and service regimes, so treat the selected schedule as authoritative and expect anything from roughly annual to two-yearly servicing depending on your ML. Diesel-specific checks typically include fuel filter condition, air intake sealing, glow plug system health and monitoring for oil leaks around the turbo and breather systems. If your ML is used for lots of short journeys, extra attention to emissions-related components and regenerations is advisable.

Petrol ML maintenance (V6, V8 and AMG)

Petrol Mercedes-Benz ML models range from mainstream V6 and V8 engines (for example 111, 112, 113, 272, 273, 276 and 278 families) to high-performance AMG units such as 156 and 157. Regular oil and filter servicing remains the foundation, but the correct grade and approval matter, especially on later engines with tighter tolerances. In addition to routine fluid checks, pay close attention to ignition components (spark plugs and coils), intake and vacuum hoses, and cooling system condition to avoid overheating under load. Higher-output models can be harder on brakes, tyres and driveline fluids, so follow the selected schedule closely and adjust for spirited driving or towing.

LPG ML maintenance (bi-fuel conversions and variants)

Some Mercedes-Benz ML variants are listed with LPG alongside petrol, often based on petrol engine families such as 112, 113, 156 and 272. Alongside the standard petrol service items, LPG use benefits from careful attention to ignition condition because weak spark energy can show up sooner on gas. Where fitted, LPG system components such as filters, injector/rail condition and hose routing should be inspected regularly, and any gas smell should be treated as urgent. Because LPG arrangements can vary by model year and installation, use the selector for the closest match and verify any LPG-specific service steps for your exact vehicle.

Common service operations for Mercedes-Benz

The maintenance operations listed below reflect typical ML service items, but the exact cadence depends on the specific generation, engine family and duty cycle. Once you’ve selected your ML variant, use the schedule as the baseline and shorten intervals for heavy towing, frequent short trips or harsh conditions.

Operation Typical interval Notes
Oil and filter changeSee selector aboveVaries by engine and recommended oil grade
Air filter30,000 to 60,000 kmMore often in urban or dusty driving
Cabin filter15,000 to 30,000 km or 1 yearAffects air conditioning and air quality
Brake fluid2 years (all models)Regardless of mileage
CoolantPer manufacturer (typically 5 years or 100,000 km)Check level and condition (colour, deposits) at every service
Front brake padsDepending on use (typically 30,000 to 60,000 km)Wear depends on driving style and load carried

Mercedes-Benz electronic diagnostics

If your ML has a warning light or drivability issue, an OBD scan is often the quickest first step before parts swapping. Our fault-code guide at /pages/fault-codes-obd-car-mercedes_benz-ml explains common OBD-II code groups (powertrain P-codes, body B-codes, chassis C-codes and network U-codes) and what they usually indicate. Use codes alongside symptoms and basic checks, then confirm with live data where possible.
