Servicing by engine type

Diesel GL maintenance (CDI and BlueTEC)

Diesel Mercedes-Benz GL models commonly use CDI and BlueTEC engines (such as GL 320 CDI, 350 CDI and 350 BlueTEC), where oil quality and correct specification are especially important for long-term turbocharger and timing system health. Oil change intervals can vary widely by model year and engine, so treat broad figures as guidance and confirm the exact distance and time limits shown for your selection. If your GL is BlueTEC, ensure any service work respects emissions-system requirements, as diesel aftertreatment components can be sensitive to incorrect fluids and neglected servicing. Regular checks for intake leaks, intercooler hose condition and signs of oil dilution can also help prevent drivability issues between scheduled services.

Petrol GL maintenance (V6, V8 and AMG)

Petrol Mercedes-Benz GL variants include V6 and V8 options, plus high-performance AMG versions, which can place greater demand on ignition components, cooling capacity and oil condition. Even when a longer service interval is shown for your specific engine, short-trip use and heavy towing can justify more frequent oil and filter changes than a lightly used vehicle. Keep an eye on coolant level and condition, and address any overheating symptoms promptly, as higher-output engines are less tolerant of cooling-system weaknesses. For AMG models in particular, using the correct approved fluids and maintaining a consistent service history is key to preserving performance and reliability.

LPG-capable GL maintenance

A small number of Mercedes-Benz GL petrol models may be listed with LPG capability in certain markets or conversions, so maintenance needs can differ from standard petrol-only servicing. LPG operation can increase sensitivity to ignition condition, so spark plugs and coil health should be kept in top order and any misfire addressed quickly. Because LPG systems are often installed or maintained separately from the base vehicle, it is important to follow any LPG-specific inspection and filter-change requirements alongside the normal GL service plan shown for your selected engine. If you are unsure whether your GL is factory-equipped or converted, verify the system type before ordering parts or booking specialist work.

Common service operations for Mercedes-Benz

The operations listed below reflect typical Mercedes-Benz GL scheduled maintenance items, but the exact cadence can vary by generation, engine and usage. Once you select your GL year range and engine, the table will better reflect the intervals that apply to your vehicle.

Mercedes-Benz electronic diagnostics

If a warning light is on or the GL is running poorly between services, an OBD scan can quickly narrow the fault down to a system or component. Our Mercedes-Benz GL fault codes page explains how generic P-codes relate to powertrain and emissions issues, while other OBD categories can point to chassis, body and network communication problems. Use the code as a starting point, then confirm the cause with targeted checks before replacing parts.
