Servicing by engine type

Petrol BMW 5-Series maintenance

Petrol 5-Series models use a broad mix of four-, six- and V8 engines, so service needs can differ even within the same model year. Regular oil and filter changes are key for long-term timing chain and turbo health on common families such as B48, B58, N20, N52 and N55, and it is also important to keep the cooling system in good order to prevent overheating-related faults. If your car is direct-injection, plan for intake and PCV/breather system checks as part of normal upkeep, and address misfires promptly to protect the catalytic converter. Performance variants such as those using N63 and S63 place extra demand on fluids, ignition components and cooling, so sticking closely to the correct schedule matters.

Diesel BMW 5-Series maintenance

Diesel 5-Series engines are common across many generations, including families such as B47, B57, N47, N57 and M57, and their maintenance priorities reflect high torque and emissions hardware. Alongside routine oil and filter servicing, pay attention to DPF health, EGR operation and boost pipework to help avoid drivability issues and excessive smoke. Vehicles used mainly for short trips can be harder on the DPF, so following the correct service plan and responding quickly to warning lamps helps prevent expensive repairs. Where fitted, make sure fuel filtration and air intake condition are not neglected, as both have a strong impact on injector and turbo longevity.

48V (MHEV) BMW 5-Series maintenance

48V (MHEV) 5-Series models combine a conventional petrol or diesel engine with mild-hybrid hardware, so the service plan needs to cover both the engine and the electrical system. The core combustion-engine tasks remain familiar (oil, filters and cooling-system checks), but condition monitoring of the 48V battery, charging system and associated cabling is also important for reliable stop-start and torque assist. Engines such as B48, B47 and B57 appear in 48V applications, so the exact schedule still depends on the chosen drivetrain and year. Any work around high-current wiring should be approached carefully and in line with the specified procedure for your model.

Electricity and petrol (plug-in hybrid) BMW 5-Series maintenance

Plug-in hybrid 5-Series models pair an electric drive system with a petrol engine, so routine servicing is split between normal engine upkeep and hybrid-system checks. Oil, filters and cooling circuits still matter, but they may follow a different cadence because the engine can run fewer miles than a non-hybrid equivalent, depending on how the car is used. Powertrains such as B48 paired with hybrid components benefit from correct coolant condition and leak checks, as thermal management is critical for both efficiency and reliability. Always follow the specified isolation and safety steps for any work involving orange high-voltage cabling or battery components.

LPG BMW 5-Series maintenance

LPG-equipped 5-Series models add an extra fuel system on top of the petrol setup, so maintenance should cover both sides. In addition to standard petrol-engine servicing (oil, filters and ignition components), the LPG tank, lines, vapouriser/regulator and filters need periodic inspection to keep running smooth and to prevent leaks. Engines seen with LPG conversions in this range include examples from the N52, N53 and N62 families, and correct spark plug specification and condition can be especially important for good combustion on gas. Because LPG installations vary, selecting the correct model details and following the schedule for your specific system is essential.

Common service operations for BMW

The operations listed below cover the routine service items typically scheduled for BMW 5-Series models, but the exact order and cadence can vary by generation, engine and fuel system. Once you select your model details, the plan will show the correct intervals and any additional checks specific to that drivetrain.

Operation Typical interval Notes
Oil and filter changeSee selector aboveVaries by engine and recommended oil grade
Air filter30,000 to 60,000 kmMore often in urban or dusty driving
Cabin filter15,000 to 30,000 km or 1 yearAffects air conditioning and air quality
Brake fluid2 years (all models)Regardless of mileage
CoolantPer manufacturer (typically 5 years or 100,000 km)Check level and condition (colour, deposits) at every service

BMW electronic diagnostics

If your BMW 5-Series shows an engine management light or drivability problems, checking the stored OBD2 fault codes can help you pinpoint the system at fault before you start replacing parts. Our fault-code guide explains common DTC groups such as misfire, fuel/air metering, emissions (including DPF and EGR on diesel models), sensor and electrical supply issues. Start here: BMW 5-Series OBD2 fault codes. Always confirm repairs with live data and a post-fix code clear and road test.
