You must not drive with headlight units in poor condition (broken mounting or lens, clouded lens, oxidised reflector). A lighting fault is an MOT failure and, if you are stopped, can result in a fixed penalty notice (typically £100) and possibly the vehicle being taken off the road.

Repair or replace?

Before replacing a complete headlight unit, weigh up whether it can be repaired. Manufacturers often offer repair kits for broken mounting tabs. A scratched or hazed lens can be restored by sanding, polishing and a suitable lacquer.

🔧

Difficulty 2/5

Removal is not difficult but can be lengthy if it means taking off the bumper (front headlight). Tools: usually a 10 mm spanner.

⚠️

Alignment essential

After refitting a front headlight unit, a beam setting using a headlamp aligner is essential so the beam points correctly without dazzling other road users.

🔩

Method

Disconnect the battery, remove the front bumper if necessary, undo the mounting screws, pull out the headlight unit, disconnect the connectors, refit in reverse order.
